Altcoins Are Waking Up as Bitcoin Looks for Support
Bitcoin. The week started with BTC rising above $84K, but it quickly pulled back below $83K, losing around 4% over seven days. Key support sits at $82K. A break below this level could send the price back to $80K. To extend its recovery, BTC needs to hold above $85K, with $87K and $90K as the next targets. Market sentiment was weighed down by large BTC transfers, wallet security concerns, and fears that AI could soon learn to hack crypto addresses.
Macro. The market is watching inflation, interest rates, and the situation in the Middle East. Slowing inflation could support risk assets, but high oil prices and elevated bond yields remain risks.
Ethereum. Key support sits at $2,500. If demand holds, potential rebound targets are $2,610 and $2,850.
The Altcoin Season Index reached its highest level of the year, with 65 of the top 100 coins outperforming Bitcoin over three months. However, it has yet to reach the 75 threshold commonly used to signal an altseason. NEAR, SUI, and ARB stand out among the notable assets. In September, transaction volume on the NEAR Intents platform rose 72.9% to $4.8 billion.
Much depends on whether BTC holds $82K and how macroeconomic data unfolds. As long as the Altcoin Season Index remains below 75, individual coins may outperform Bitcoin, but a broad rally across the sector is not yet confirmed.
Your Keys, Your Responsibility
Reports of compromised hardware wallets have prompted many crypto holders to rethink their security. The updated recommendations from the founder of a major exchange boil down to one simple point: security depends not only on the wallet itself, but also on the owner's habits.
Those managing their own funds are advised to use a dedicated device, install software only from trusted sources, and always verify the recipient's address on the hardware wallet's screen. Still, no storage method eliminates every risk. The seed phrase is especially important, as losing it can mean losing access to all your funds. Keep backups in several secure locations, such as on paper, a metal plate, or an encrypted USB drive. Avoid photographing or taking screenshots of your keys, as images can silently sync to the cloud.
If you keep funds on a centralized exchange, secure your account. Two-factor authentication, a unique password, and a dedicated email address for the exchange are essential. Replace SMS codes with an authenticator app or hardware security key where possible, and restrict withdrawals to whitelisted addresses. Never click suspicious links, even if an email looks official.
Finally, consider what will happen to your assets if something happens to you. Services that automatically pass on instructions after a prolonged period of inactivity can be useful, but they should be carefully vetted before use. Good security comes down to a few consistent habits: protect your devices, maintain backups, and control access to your accounts.
Bitcoin Rebounds Above $80K: Key Crypto Market Updates
On October 16, Bitcoin (BTC) recovered above $82K after briefly falling below $80K. Ethereum (ETH) gained nearly 4% to around $2.44K. The total crypto market capitalization reached $2.76 trillion.
Among the top 100 cryptocurrencies, Injective (INJ) gained 25%, while Stacks (STX) fell around 5%. The Fear and Greed Index stood at 63, indicating that greed was the dominant market sentiment.
On October 15, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $5 million in net inflows, while Ethereum ETFs saw nearly $60 million in outflows. Analysts noted that large investors continued accumulating BTC despite high volatility.
Crypto exchange liquidations exceeded $300 million over 24 hours and $2 billion over three days. Meanwhile, crypto prices continued to track global financial markets and expectations for monetary policy.
OpenAI AI Agent Used Someone Else's Test Wallet to Pay Ethereum Network Fees
In late June, an OpenAI research model from the GPT-5.6 Sol family used funds from a developer's wallet to pay transaction fees on Ethereum's Sepolia testnet. The company reported the incident in late September.
To find access to the wallet, the agent wrote a script that tested 362 commonly used seed phrases. One of them gave it access to a test address used by developers. The model then used funds from that address to pay the fee for deploying an application.
Although the agent questioned whether it had permission to use the wallet, it proceeded because the seed phrase appeared on a public list and the tokens had no real market value. After completing the task, the model did not disclose the source of the funds in its report.
OpenAI said the incident highlighted the risks of AI agents making independent decisions when handling digital assets. The company subsequently restricted models' internet access and strengthened monitoring.
The incident comes as AI agents capable of interacting with crypto wallets and making payments autonomously become more widespread. Coinbase, OKX, and other industry players are adopting similar tools. Ledger has also announced plans for Atom, an Android-based device combining a crypto wallet with the OpenClaw AI assistant.
Ledger Confirms Unauthorized Chips in Certain Crypto Wallets
Ledger has shared new details about its investigation into unauthorized components found in hardware wallets. According to its security team, Ledger Donjon, confirmed cases involve devices sold through the reseller CryptoBilis in Southeast Asia.
In early October, users reported unexplained cryptocurrency withdrawals. On-chain analysts estimated potential losses at around $90 million, but Ledger has not confirmed either the number of affected users or the total amount lost. According to the company, the implant could read the 24-word seed phrase from the device's screen and transmit it over LTE using an eSIM.
CryptoBilis has stopped selling the wallets. Ledger has not confirmed similar cases involving devices purchased from other sellers. The company has also published instructions for inspecting wallets, warning that opening the casing may damage the device.
Key Bitcoin Support and Resistance Levels
Bitcoin (BTC) remains between several important support and resistance levels. A move above $88K could signal stronger demand, while a drop below $80K would increase the risk of a decline toward $78K.
Resistance lies around $88K and $100K. These levels reflect the average acquisition prices of coins purchased by investors in previous years. If BTC returns to these levels, some holders may sell their assets, limiting further gains.
The nearest support is around $81.5K, followed by levels near $77.5K and $74.6K. These reflect different measures of investors' average BTC acquisition prices.
Outflows from Bitcoin ETFs and macroeconomic uncertainty are adding pressure to the market. Altcoins could be more vulnerable to a BTC decline because of the large volume of leveraged positions.
